The Folded Flag Foundation recently held a special event to thank its premier partners – Black Knight Financial Services, Fidelity National Financial and FIS. The event was held at J. Alexander’s Restaurant in Jacksonville, Fla. John Coogan, Executive Director of The Folded Flag Foundation, presented 7th grader Tanner Zellem with a full scholarship for his private school fees for the upcoming 2017 – 2018 school year. Tanner’s father lost his life serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, and The Folded Flag Foundation is proud to help Tanner continue his education. The Folded Flag Foundation would like to thank J. Alexander’s for donating the location and food for the event.
The Folded Flag Foundation honored several Gold Star families recently at Chicago’s Pritzker Military Library and Museum. Among the presenters at the fundraiser were Gold Star father, Jim Frazier; Andrew Smith, West Point Class of 1995 and Senior Counsel at Loeb and Loeb, and co-founder of the Ten Ninety Brewing Company; Al Nahas, West Point Class of 1967 and author of Warriors Remembered; and Darryl Rodgers, West Point Class of 1994 and vice president at Bernstein Private Wealth Management.
Invitees at this year’s Rock Creek Cattle Company Wine, Arts & Food Festival spent three days viewing beautiful art, sampling world-class wines and enjoying delicious cuisine. All proceeds from the annual event, including the money raised during the silent auction of dozens of pieces of fabulous sculpture, handmade jewelry, artwork and more, go directly to The Folded Flag Foundation. The Rock Creek Cattle Company is a members-only club and residential settlement of exquisite homesites set on a historic, 30,000 acre, working cattle ranch near Deer Lodge, Montana.
The Folded Flag Foundation was honored on Military Appreciation Day at the BB&T Atlanta Open tennis tournament. As part of the day’s events, Folded Flag Scholarship recipient Crystal Blasjo and her two children joined representatives from the USTA Foundation and The Folded Flag Foundaton at center court for a ceremonial coin toss, and the presentation of a $15,000 donation from the USTA Foundation to The Folded Flag.
On the evening before Military Appreciation Day at the BB&T Atlanta Open, Trustees and representatives from The Folded Flag Foundation hosted a dinner at Atlanta’s Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill. The evening provided an opportunity for local businesses and civic leaders to gain a better understanding of the mission of The Folded Flag Foundation, as well as to meet some of the recipients of Folded Flag scholarships and see first-hand how this organization is helping in the lives of the families of our fallen heroes. The Folded Flag Foundation wishes to thank the Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill for their generous contribution in donating the evening’s dinner for all guests.
Four Roses Bourbon held their Second Annual Four Roses Charity Cocktail Challenge in 10 cities – New York, Chicago, Austin, Atlanta, Louisville, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and St. Louis, with the finals taking place July 21, in New Orleans. Proceeds from these events benefitted The Folded Flag Foundation. The Folded Flag Foundation was honored to be a part of these events and thanks Four Roses Bourbon for their support of our mission.
John Coogan, Executive Director for The Folded Flag Foundation, was honored to present custom-made American flag boxes to Kelly McHugh and Colleen Katzenberger. Kelly is the daughter of Col. John McHugh; husband, father of three and 24-year distinguished Army soldier, who was killed in action as the result of a suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2010. Colleen is the wife of Army Staff Sergeant Jeremy Katzenberger, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011 at the age of 26, and is a Folded Flag Scholarship recipient. The event was hosted by retired Army Captain Jim D’Orio, John McHugh’s childhood friend, West Point class of 1986 classmate and founder of the Johnny Mac Soldiers’ Fund. It is in Col. McHugh’s memory the Johnny Mac Soldiers’ Fund was established.
The Florida Tackle & Gun Club partnered with The Folded Flag Foundation to host the first annual I Carry the Flag motorcycle charity ride to benefit the Folded Flag. Motorcycle riders from across northeast Florida and southeast Georgia participated in the event, joining with other riders at several predetermined restaurants and veteran organization locations across north Florida who also signed up to help. Riders then returned to headquarters of the Florida Tackle & Gun Club for an afternoon filled with music, food, drinks, and many, many flags. Thanks to the hard work of countless volunteers in the Florida Tackle & Gun Club, and the local businesses who sponsored the event and donated goods and services, the Florida Tackle & Gun Club presented The Folded Flag Foundation with a donation of $37,000.
