ABOUT

THE NEED

The Folded Flag Foundation: Since 2001, 10,000 men and women have died leaving behind thousands of spouses and children
The Folded Flag Foundation: On average, 2 children are left behind per household; aged 10 on average
The Folded Flag Foundation: The Surviving Spouses - 97% are women, 30% are homemakers, 13% are unemployed and 50% earn less than $50,000 per year
The Folded Flag Foundation: Limited government funding exists to support surviving families in their transition to civilian life
The Folded Flag Foundation: $10,000 is the average gap for surviving families across education levels

$100,000,000 IS NEEDED TO COVER EDUCATIONAL COSTS OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS

As recently as 2003, the benefit paid to eligible survivors of military personnel killed in the line of duty was a one-time payment of only $6,000. Since then, the death benefit has been raised. But despite the increase, the current death benefit is often unable to provide the necessary support to Gold Star family members.
